Holy Week

April 17 & 18 | 6:30 pm

Maundy is Latin for “commandment.” The emphasis of Maundy Thursday worship is the love and forgiveness which Jesus is committed to giving.

Gathering Words

Confession

L: Let us confess together.

C: God of grace, you have come to us in our Savior Jesus, but we have ignored him, denied him, even betrayed him. We have not faithfully followed his commandment to love one another as he loved us. Have mercy upon us.

L: Jesus said, “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another.”

C: This Jesus said to his disciples, after washing their feet and having supper with him.

L: Tonight, we remember that night and those words.

C: Above all, we remember his breaking of the bread and his pouring of the wine, pointing to his imminent death.

L: O God, let this service of remembrance sober us of any illusions we may have about our own courage and faithfulness.

C: Help us to realize our entire dependence on his courage, his faithfulness, his forgiveness.

L: With repentant hearts, let us hail the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

C: Through Jesus’ sacrifice, we are pardoned and healed. Amen.

Forgiveness

Song Restore in Us, O God Music: Hal H. Hopson; Text: Carl P. Daw

Restore in us, O God,

the splendor of your love;

renew your image in our hearts,

and all our sins remove.

O Spirit, wake in us

the wonder of your pow'r;

from fruitless fear unfurl our lives

like springtime bud and flow'r.

Bring us, O Christ, to share

the fullness of your joy;

baptize us in the risen life

that death cannot destroy.

Three-personed God, fulfill

the promise of your grace,

that we, when all our searching ends,

may see you face to face.

Greeting

L: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

C: And also with you.

Prayer of the Day

 L: Holy God, source of all love, on the night of his betrayal, Jesus gave us a new commandment:

C: to love one another as he loves us.

L: Write this commandment on our hearts,

C: and give us the will to serve others as he was servant of all.

L: In Jesus’ name,

C: Amen.

Sermon

Song Bread of Life, Our Host and Meal by Ray Makeever

Bread of life, our host and meal,

Jesus, feed us.

Christ, by faith, to see and feel,

feed us with your love.

Bread now break and wine now pour,

Jesus, feed us.

Make us one, our hope restore;

feed us with your love.

Grant forgiveness in the feast

Jesus, feed us

for the greatest and the least;

feed us with your love.

Thank you for this gift we share.

Jesus, feed us.

Save God's children everywhere;

feed us with your love.

Holy Communion

Song During Communion What Feast of Love Text: Delores Dufner; Music: English ballad, 16th cent.

What feast of love is offered here,

 what banquet come from heaven?

 What food of everlasting life,

 what gracious gift is given?

 This, this is Christ the king,

 the bread come down from heaven.

 Oh, taste and see and sing!

 How sweet the manna given!

 What light of truth is offered here,

 what covenant from heaven?

 What hope of everlasting life,

 what wondrous word is given?

 This, this is Christ the king,

 the sun come down from heaven.

 Oh, see and hear and sing!

 The Word of God is given!

 What wine of love is offered here,

 what crimson drink from heaven?

 What stream of everlasting life,

 what precious blood is given?

 This, this is Christ the king,

 the sweetest wine of heaven.

 Oh, taste and see and sing!

 The Son of God is given!

Introduction

Reading: John 18:1-11

Song: Go to Dark Gethsemane (vs. 1-3) Music: Richard Redhead; Text: James Montgomery

Go to dark Gethsemane,

 all who feel the tempter's pow'r;

 your Redeemer's conflict see.

 Watch with him one bitter hour;

 turn not from his griefs away;

 learn from Jesus Christ to pray.

Follow to the judgment hall,

 view the Lord of life arraigned;

 oh, the wormwood and the gall!

 Oh, the pangs his soul sustained!

 Shun not suff'ring, shame, or loss;

 learn from him to bear the cross.

 Calv'ry's mournful mountain climb;

 there, adoring at his feet,

 mark that miracle of time,

 God's own sacrifice complete.

 "It is finished!" hear him cry;

 learn from Jesus Christ to die.

Song: What Wondrous Love Is This? (vs. 1-2) Irish Traditional; Text Rory Cooney

What wondrous love is this,

O my soul, O my soul!

What wondrous love is this,

O my soul!

What wondrous love is this

that caused the Lord of bliss

to bear the dreadful curse

for my soul, for my soul,

to bear the dreadful curse

for my soul?

When I was sinking down,

sinking down, sinking down,

when I was sinking down,

sinking down,

when I was sinking down

beneath God's righteous frown,

Christ laid aside his crown

for my soul, for my soul,

Christ laid aside his crown

for my soul.

Song: Beneath the Cross of Jesus (vs. 1) Music: Frederick C. Maker; Text: Elizabeth C. Clephane

Beneath the cross of Jesus

I long to take my stand;

the shadow of a mighty rock

within a weary land,

a home within a wilderness,

a rest upon the way,

from the burning of the noontide heat

and burdens of the day.

Song: Beneath the Cross of Jesus (vs. 2-3) Music: Frederick C. Maker; Text: Elizabeth C. Clephane

Upon the cross of Jesus,

my eye at times can see

the very dying form of one

who suffered there for me.

And from my contrite heart, with tears,

two wonders I confess:

the wonder of his glorious love

and my unworthiness.

I take, O cross, your shadow

for my abiding place;

I ask no other sunshine than

the sunshine of his face;

content to let the world go by,

to know no gain nor loss,

my sinful self my only shame,

my glory all, the cross.

Song: O Sacred Head, Now Wounded (vs. 1-2) Music: Hans Leo Hassler; Text: Paul Gerhardt

O sacred head, now wounded,

with grief and shame weighed down,

now scornfully surrounded

with thorns, thine only crown;

O sacred head, what glory,

what bliss till now was thine!

Yet, though despised and gory,

I joy to call thee mine.

 How pale thou art with anguish,

 with sore abuse and scorn;

 how does thy face now languish,

 which once was bright as morn!

 Thy grief and bitter passion

 were all for sinners' gain;

 mine, mine was the transgression,

 but thine the deadly pain.

Song: Were You There? (vs. 1-2) African American spiritual

Were you there

when they crucified my Lord?

Were you there

when they crucified my Lord?

Oh, sometimes it causes

me to tremble, tremble, tremble.

Were you there

when they crucified my Lord?

Were you there

when they nailed him to the tree?

Were you there

when they nailed him to the tree?

Oh, sometimes it causes

me to tremble, tremble, tremble

Were you there

when they nailed him to the tree?

Song: Were You There? (vs. 3-5) African American spiritual

Were you there

when they pierced him in the side?

Were you there

when they pierced him in the side?

Oh, sometimes it causes

me to tremble, tremble, tremble.

Were you there

when they pierced him in the side?

Were you there

when the sun refused to shine?

Were you there

when the sun refused to shine?

Oh, sometimes it causes

me to tremble, tremble, tremble.

Were you there

when the sun refused to shine?

Were you there

when they laid him in the tomb?

Were you there

when they laid him in the tomb?

Oh, sometimes it causes

me to tremble, tremble, tremble

Were you there

when they laid him in the tomb?
